About South Islamorada Underwater Coral Gardens
South Islamorada Underwater Coral Gardens is an outer, exposed rock-bottom flat off Islamorada, Florida, lying in 10 to 20 feet of water within the Southwest Region of Florida Keys state waters. Permit and bonefish both peak here from March through May, with bonefish returning for a second run in September and October, while mutton snapper hold over the rock from March through June. Great barracuda take over the flat in the winter months of December through February, and cobia round out the species list. Anglers target permit and bonefish by sight casting over the hard bottom, presenting live crabs or bucktail jigs to permit and live shrimp or soft plastic shrimp to bonefish. Mutton snapper respond to bottom fishing with live ballyhoo, cut ballyhoo, or squid, and barracuda strike tube lures and topwater plugs cast across the open, exposed water.
