About Upper Cross Bank
Upper Cross Bank is an exposed sand flat on the outer edge of the Florida Keys State Waters off Islamorada, with depths running 10 to 15 feet across open bottom. Permit and Bonefish draw the most attention here, with Permit peaking from March through May and Bonefish peaking March through May and again in September and October. Anglers target Permit by sight casting live crabs, crab flies, or bucktail jigs over the clean sand, while Bonefish respond to sight fishing with spinning tackle using live shrimp or soft plastic shrimp. Mutton Snapper peak from March through June and hold to bottom fishing with live ballyhoo, cut ballyhoo, or squid, and Great Barracuda move onto the flat from December through February, where sight casting tube lures and topwater plugs draws strikes. Cobia also cruise the bank, rounding out a species mix that keeps the flat productive through most of the year.
