About American Shoal
American Shoal is an exposed outer sand flat in Federal Atlantic waters off the Florida Keys, east of Key West, with depths running 5 to 15 feet. Dorado peak from March through July, and sailfish take over from October through February, with wahoo, blackfin tuna, and king mackerel rounding out the pelagic lineup. For dorado, trolling rigged ballyhoo, skirted trolling lures, feathers, or small trolling plugs covers water efficiently, while run-and-gun sight casting with live pilchards, bucktail jigs, or soft plastic swimbaits targets fish once they show. Sailfish anglers rely on kite fishing with live ballyhoo, pilchards, goggle eyes, or threadfin herring, and slow trolling the same live baits works as a strong alternative. The shoal's outer exposure puts it in the path of open-water conditions, so the shallow sand bottom and surrounding water reward anglers who read current and bait movement closely.
