About Crane Key
Crane Key is an exposed rocky drop-off in the Florida Keys State Waters west of Key West, where the bottom falls away through depths of 10 to 25 feet. Tarpon move through from March to June, and live bait drifting with live crabs, live mullet, live pinfish, or live shrimp along the edge of the drop puts baits in their path. Mutton Snapper peak over the same March to June window, holding tight to the rock where bottom fishing with cut ballyhoo, live pilchards, squid, or cut bonito targets them directly. Great Barracuda take over in winter, peaking from December through February, and casting tube lures, topwater plugs, or needlefish lures across the outer face draws fast strikes. Gray Snapper and Common Snook also work the rocky structure, rounding out a year-round mix of species on this outer exposed ledge.
