About Fleming Key
Fleming Key is a protected sand flat off Key West, Florida, where 5 to 10 feet of water sits in an inner, sheltered setting within the Florida Keys State Waters Southwest Region. Tarpon and mutton snapper both peak here from March through June, while great barracuda take over as the main draw from December through February, and gray snapper and common snook round out the species mix. Tarpon anglers rely mainly on live bait drifting with live crabs, live mullet, live pinfish, or live shrimp across the sand, and fly fishing with tarpon flies, toad flies, or worm flies suits the shallow, sheltered water. Mutton snapper respond to bottom fishing with cut ballyhoo, live pilchards, squid, or cut bonito, and jigging with bucktail jigs or jig heads with soft plastics works the same bottom. In the winter months, casting tube lures, needlefish lures, or topwater plugs over the flat targets cruising barracuda.
