About Middle Ground
Middle Ground is an exposed sand flat off Key West, Florida, sitting in 5 to 10 feet of water within the Southwest Region of the Florida Keys state waters. Permit are the headline target here, peaking from March through May, while bonefish and cobia also work the open sand. Anglers target permit primarily with live crabs and live shrimp, and also present crab flies and soft plastic crab jigs to fish tailing or cruising across the bottom. Great barracuda peak from December through February and respond to tube lures, needlefish lures, and topwater plugs cast across the flat. Mutton snapper move through from March through June, when bottom fishing with cut ballyhoo, live pilchards, or squid along the sand produces steady action.
