About Hurricane Key

Hurricane Key is a protected sand flat near Key West, Florida, lying in 5 to 10 feet of water within the Florida Keys State Waters Southwest Region. Tarpon move across the flat from March through June, and anglers target them by drifting live crabs, live mullet, or live pinfish, or by presenting tarpon flies and toad flies on the fly rod. Mutton Snapper share the same March-to-June peak and respond to bottom fishing with cut ballyhoo, squid, or live pilchards set on the sand. Great Barracuda take over in the cooler months of December through February, when casting tube lures, needlefish lures, and topwater plugs across the shallow, sheltered water draws aggressive strikes. Gray Snapper and Common Snook round out the species mix on this inner, protected flat.
