About Spanish Banks
Spanish Banks is an exposed sand flat off Marathon in the Florida Keys, holding 5 to 10 feet of water within the Southwest Region's state waters. Permit and tarpon peak here from March through June, bonefish move across the sand in April–May and again in September–October, and great barracuda take over from November through February, with red drum also present on the flat. Sight casting is the dominant approach for bonefish and permit over the open bottom, using shrimp-pattern and crab-pattern flies for bonefish and live crabs or bucktail jigs for permit. Tarpon respond to live bait drifting with live mullet, live pinfish, or live crabs worked across the flat. Through the cooler months, casting tube lures, topwater plugs, and spoons draws strikes from barracuda cruising the sand.
