About Dredgers Key
Dredgers Key sits in the protected inner waters off Key West, Florida, where a sand-bottom drop-off falls from 5 to 25 feet within the Florida Keys State Waters Southwest Region. Yellowtail Snapper peak from May through July, and anglers target them by chumming and drifting with chum blocks, glass minnows, and live pilchards along the edge of the slope. Mutton Snapper run strongest from March through June and respond to bottom fishing with cut ballyhoo, squid, or cut bonito set on the sand at the base of the drop. Winter shifts the focus to Black Grouper in January and February and Great Barracuda from December through February, the latter taken by casting tube lures, topwater plugs, and needlefish lures over the shallower shelf. Gray Snapper, Hogfish, and King Mackerel round out the species list on this sheltered stretch of water.
