About East Harbor Keys

East Harbor Keys is a protected sand-bottom flat near Key West, Florida, set in 5 to 10 feet of water within the sheltered inner reaches of the Florida Keys' southwest state waters. Tarpon and mutton snapper both peak from March through June, great barracuda peak from December through February, and gray snapper and common snook also hold on the flat. Tarpon anglers work the area primarily by drifting live crabs, live mullet, live pinfish, or live shrimp, while fly anglers cast tarpon flies and toad flies over the sand. Mutton snapper respond to bottom fishing with cut ballyhoo, live pilchards, squid, or cut bonito placed on the open bottom. Through the winter barracuda peak, casting tube lures, needlefish lures, or topwater plugs across the shallow, protected water is the dominant approach.
