About East Rockland Key
East Rockland Key sits on the outer, exposed edge of the Southwest Florida Keys near Key West, where a rocky drop-off falls through 10 to 25 feet of water. Yellowtail Snapper peak here from May through July, Mutton Snapper from March through June, and Black Grouper and Great Barracuda in the cooler months of December through February. Gray Snapper, Hogfish, and King Mackerel round out the species list along the rock edge. Anglers target yellowtail by chumming and drifting with chum blocks, glass minnows, and cut ballyhoo, while mutton snapper and black grouper respond to bottom fishing with live pilchards, live pinfish, and cut bait worked tight to the drop-off. Barracuda hold over the shallower rock, where casting tube lures and topwater plugs draws strikes through the winter peak.
