About Joe's Tug Reef

Joe's Tug Reef is an artificial reef off Key West in the Florida Keys State Waters: Southwest Region, where a sunken tug provides vertical structure for reef fish and passing pelagics. Yellowtail Snapper peak from May through July, Mutton Snapper from March through June, and Black Grouper in January and February, while Hogfish and Gray Snapper round out the bottom species around the wreck. Anglers bring Yellowtail Snapper up off the structure by chumming and drifting with chum blocks and glass minnows, and they work cut ballyhoo or live pilchards on the bottom for Mutton Snapper. In the cooler months, King Mackerel peak from November through March and respond to slow trolling with live ballyhoo or live blue runners along the reef's edges. Great Barracuda peak from December through February and strike tube lures and topwater plugs cast over the wreck.
