About Kingfish Shoals

Kingfish Shoals is an exposed sand flat on the outer edge of the Key West shoreline, holding 5 to 10 feet of water within the Florida Keys State Waters Southwest Region. Permit headline the spot with a peak from March through May, while Mutton Snapper peak from March through June and Great Barracuda move onto the flat in numbers from December through February. Bonefish and Cobia also cruise the sand, rounding out a mixed lineup of flats and open-water species. Live crabs and live shrimp are the dominant approach for Permit, with crab flies and soft plastic crab jigs covering fish tailing across the clean bottom. Barracuda respond to tube lures, needlefish lures, and topwater plugs cast across the shallows, and Mutton Snapper come to cut ballyhoo and live pilchards fished on the bottom.
