About Maryland Shoal
Maryland Shoal is an exposed sand flat on the outer edge of the Florida Keys' southwest state waters near Key West, with depths running 5 to 10 feet. Permit are the headline target, peaking from March through May, when anglers work the clean sand bottom with live crabs and live shrimp or present crab flies to tailing fish. Mutton Snapper peak from March through June and respond to bottom fishing with cut ballyhoo, live pilchards, squid, or cut bonito, while bucktail jigs and soft plastic crab jigs also produce for permit cruising the shallows. Great Barracuda move onto the shoal from December through February and strike tube lures, needlefish lures, and topwater plugs cast across the open flat. Bonefish and Cobia also patrol the shoal, rounding out a varied shallow-water fishery on this outer sand bottom.
