About Ninefoot Shoal
Ninefoot Shoal is an outer, exposed sand flat in the Florida Keys State Waters off Key West, holding 10 to 15 feet of water over open bottom. Permit lead the target list with a peak from March through May, while Mutton Snapper push onto the shoal from March into June and Great Barracuda dominate the winter window from December through February. Bonefish and Cobia also cruise the sand, rounding out a varied flats lineup. Live bait fishing with live crabs or live shrimp is the dominant approach for Permit, with crab flies and soft plastic crab jigs serving as supporting options. Barracuda answer to casting with tube lures, needlefish lures, and topwater plugs across the flat, and Mutton Snapper respond to bottom fishing with cut ballyhoo, squid, or live pilchards.
