About O Hara Key

O Hara Key is a protected sand flat in the Florida Keys backcountry west of Key West, with water running 5 to 10 feet deep. Tarpon move across the flat from March through June, and anglers target them by drifting live crabs, live mullet, or live pinfish, while fly fishers present tarpon flies and toad flies to rolling fish. Mutton snapper share the same March-to-June peak and hold along the sand bottom, where bottom fishing with cut ballyhoo, squid, or live pilchards draws steady strikes. Great barracuda dominate the winter months from December through February, and casting tube lures, needlefish lures, or topwater plugs across the open sand produces fast, visible attacks. Gray snapper and common snook round out the species mix on this sheltered stretch of inner water.
