Pelican Key is a protected sand flat near Key West, Florida, lying within the Florida Keys State Waters Southwest Region in 5 to 10 feet of water. Yellowtail Snapper peak from May through July and Mutton Snapper from March through June, while Black Grouper and Great Barracuda take over in the cooler months, with grouper peaking in January and February and barracuda from December through February. Gray Snapper, Hogfish, and King Mackerel round out the species list on this inner, sheltered flat. Anglers target yellowtail by chumming and drifting with chum blocks and glass minnows, and they work mutton snapper with bottom fishing using cut ballyhoo, live pilchards, or squid on the sand. In winter, barracuda cruise the shallow flat and respond to casting tube lures, topwater plugs, and needlefish lures.
