About Raccoon Key
Raccoon Key is an outer, exposed drop-off near Key West, Florida, where mixed bottom falls away through 10 to 25 feet in the Florida Keys State Waters: Southwest Region. Yellowtail Snapper peak from May through July, and anglers target them by chumming and drifting with chum blocks, glass minnows, cut ballyhoo, and live pilchards to pull fish up off the edge. Mutton Snapper run strongest from March through June and respond to bottom fishing along the drop-off with cut ballyhoo, live pilchards, squid, or cut bonito. Winter shifts the focus to Black Grouper in January and February, worked with live pinfish, live grunts, or cut bait on the bottom, while Great Barracuda peak from December through February and strike tube lures, topwater plugs, and needlefish lures cast over the structure. Gray Snapper, Hogfish, and King Mackerel round out the species mix on this stretch of mixed bottom.
