About Riding Key
Riding Key is an outer-exposed drop-off west of Key West in the Florida Keys State Waters Southwest Region, where mixed bottom falls from 10 to 25 feet. Tarpon and mutton snapper peak here from March through June, while great barracuda take over as the main draw from December through February. Gray snapper and common snook round out the species mix along the edge. Live bait drifting with live crabs, live mullet, or live pinfish is the dominant approach for tarpon. Mutton snapper respond to bottom fishing with cut ballyhoo, squid, or live pilchards worked along the drop. Barracuda hit tube lures and topwater plugs cast over the shallower shelf.
