About Rockland Key
Rockland Key is a protected sand flat on the outskirts of Key West, Florida, where clear water runs 5 to 10 feet deep over open sand bottom. Tarpon move through from March to June, and live bait drifting with live crabs, live mullet, or live pinfish is the dominant approach, while fly anglers present tarpon flies and toad flies to rolling fish. Mutton Snapper share the same March-to-June peak and respond to bottom fishing with cut ballyhoo, squid, or live pilchards. Great Barracuda take over from December through February, striking tube lures, needlefish lures, and topwater plugs cast across the open sand. Gray Snapper and Common Snook round out the species mix on this sheltered stretch of inner water.
