About Sawyer Key
Sawyer Key is a protected sand flat in the Florida Keys State Waters west of Key West, where 5 to 10 feet of water spreads over open sand bottom sheltered from the outside swell. Tarpon move across the flat from March through June, and live bait drifting with live crabs, live mullet, live pinfish, or live shrimp is the dominant approach, with fly anglers working tarpon flies, toad flies, and worm flies along the same sand. Mutton snapper share that March-to-June peak and respond to bottom fishing with cut ballyhoo, live pilchards, squid, or cut bonito. Great barracuda take over the winter window from December through February, and casting tube lures, topwater plugs, needlefish lures, or bucktail jigs across the open sand draws strikes. Gray snapper and common snook round out the species mix on this inner flat.
