About Snipe Point
Snipe Point is an outer, exposed drop-off near Key West where a sand bottom falls away through 10 to 25 feet of water in the Florida Keys' southwest state waters. Tarpon and mutton snapper both peak here from March through June, while great barracuda take over the winter months from December through February, with gray snapper and common snook also working the edge. Tarpon anglers rely on live bait drifting with live crabs, live mullet, live pinfish, or live shrimp along the drop, and fly fishing with tarpon flies or toad flies covers fish that show higher in the water column. Mutton snapper respond to bottom fishing on the sand with cut ballyhoo, live pilchards, squid, or cut bonito, with flatline fishing and jigging as follow-up options. In winter, casting tube lures, topwater plugs, needlefish lures, or bucktail jigs across the edge targets cruising barracuda.
