About South Maryland Shoal Hump
South Maryland Shoal Hump is a rock pinnacle rising off the outer reef southwest of Key West, sitting in 15 to 35 feet of water fully exposed to open-ocean swell and current. Yellowtail Snapper peak here from May through July, Mutton Snapper from March through June, and Black Grouper and Great Barracuda take over in winter, with grouper peaking January–February and barracuda December–February. Gray Snapper, Hogfish, and King Mackerel round out the species mix over the hump's hard bottom. Anglers anchor up-current and work chum blocks with cut ballyhoo or live pilchards to draw yellowtail off the rock, while mutton snapper and black grouper respond to bottom fishing with cut ballyhoo, squid, or live pinfish dropped tight to the structure. Barracuda patrol the shallower top of the pinnacle, where casting tube lures or topwater plugs draws aggressive strikes.
