About Trumbo Point
Trumbo Point marks an outer, exposed rock drop-off off Key West in the Southwest Region of the Florida Keys State Waters, where the bottom falls away through depths of 260 to 660 feet. Yellowtail Snapper peak here from May through July and Mutton Snapper from March through June, while Black Grouper peak in January and February and Great Barracuda run strongest from December through February. Gray Snapper, Hogfish, and King Mackerel round out the species mix along the ledge. Chumming and drifting with chum blocks, glass minnows, and live pilchards pulls Yellowtail Snapper up off the rock, and bottom fishing with cut ballyhoo, squid, or cut bonito works the drop-off for Mutton Snapper. For Black Grouper, anglers drop live pinfish, live grunts, or live ballyhoo tight to the rocky edge where the structure breaks toward deeper water.
