About West Channel Hump
West Channel Hump is an exposed rock pinnacle rising from 25 to 45 feet of water in the Florida Keys State Waters off Key West. Yellowtail Snapper peak here from May through July, and chumming and drifting with chum blocks, glass minnows, or live pilchards draws them up off the rock. Mutton Snapper run strongest from March through June and respond to bottom fishing with cut ballyhoo, squid, or cut bonito worked tight to the structure. In winter, Black Grouper peak in January and February and take live pinfish or live grunts dropped to the base of the pinnacle, while Great Barracuda peak from December through February and strike tube lures and topwater plugs cast over the hump. Gray Snapper, Hogfish, and King Mackerel round out the species mix on this outer, exposed piece of hard bottom.
