About West Washerwoman Shoal
West Washerwoman Shoal is an outer, exposed sand flat near Key West in the southwest region of Florida Keys state waters, with depths running 5 to 10 feet. Permit peak here from March through May, mutton snapper from March through June, and great barracuda from December through February, while bonefish and cobia also work the shoal. Live bait fishing with live crabs and live shrimp is the dominant approach for permit, and crab flies or soft plastic crab jigs are presented to fish cruising over the open sand. Mutton snapper respond to bottom fishing with cut ballyhoo, squid, and live pilchards on the sand bottom. Great barracuda strike tube lures and topwater plugs cast across the shallow, exposed water.
