About Whitehead Spit
Whitehead Spit is an outer, exposed drop-off off Key West, Florida, where mixed bottom falls away through depths of 260 to 660 feet in the Southwest Region of the Florida Keys state waters. Yellowtail Snapper peak from May through July and Mutton Snapper from March through June, while the winter months belong to Black Grouper, peaking January through February, and Great Barracuda, peaking December through February. Gray Snapper, Hogfish, and King Mackerel round out the species mix along the edge. Chumming and drifting with chum blocks, glass minnows, and cut ballyhoo pulls yellowtail up off the drop, and bottom fishing with live pilchards, squid, or cut bonito works the mixed bottom for mutton snapper. Black Grouper take live pinfish and live grunts fished on the bottom, and barracuda hit tube lures and needlefish lures cast along the edge.
