About American Shoal Reef
American Shoal Reef is an artificial reef in the federal Atlantic waters off the Florida Keys, within range of Marathon. Dorado peak from March through July, mutton snapper from April through June, and black grouper from December through February, while king mackerel, wahoo, and greater amberjack round out the species list. Mutton snapper and black grouper hold tight to the reef structure, where bottom fishing with live pinfish, live pilchards, or cut bait draws strikes from both species. Bucktail jigs worked over the structure offer a supporting approach for snapper and grouper alike. Dorado anglers troll rigged ballyhoo and skirted trolling lures, then switch to live pilchards when a fish or school comes into view.
