About Bethel Bank
Bethel Bank is an exposed sand flat on the outer edge of the Florida Keys near Marathon, with water running 5 to 10 feet deep across open, clean bottom. Bonefish move across the sand in peak numbers in April–May and again in September–October, while permit and tarpon both peak from March through June. Sight casting is the dominant approach for bonefish and permit here, with shrimp-pattern flies, crab-pattern flies, and small bucktail jigs for bonefish and live crabs, crab flies, and bucktail jigs for permit. Tarpon respond to live bait drifting with live mullet, live pinfish, live crabs, and live shrimp along the deeper edges of the flat. From November through February, great barracuda take over as the main target, and anglers cast tube lures, topwater plugs, swimming plugs, and spoons across the open sand.
