About Big Pine Reef

Big Pine Reef is an artificial reef in federal Atlantic waters off the Florida Keys, located near Marathon. Dorado peak from March through July and Mutton Snapper from April through June, while Black Grouper take over as the primary bottom target from December through February. Anglers troll rigged ballyhoo, skirted trolling lures, and diving plugs for Dorado, and switch to live bait drifting with live pilchards or live goggle eyes when fish hold near the surface. Over the reef structure itself, bottom fishing with live pinfish, live grunts, and cut bait targets Black Grouper, and the same approach with live pilchards and ballyhoo plugs works for Mutton Snapper. King Mackerel, Wahoo, and Greater Amberjack round out the species list at the spot.
