About Bullard Bank
Bullard Bank is an outer, exposed sand flat off Marathon in the Florida Keys, with water running 10 to 15 feet deep over open sand bottom. Permit and tarpon both peak from March through June, and bonefish move across the sand in two windows, April through May and September through October. Sight casting is the dominant approach for bonefish and permit here, with shrimp-pattern flies, crab-pattern flies, and small bucktail jigs for bonefish and live crabs, crab flies, and bucktail jigs for permit. Tarpon anglers rely on live bait drifting with live crabs, live mullet, live pinfish, or live shrimp across the deeper edges of the flat. From November through February, great barracuda take over, and casting tube lures, topwater plugs, swimming plugs, and spoons keeps the bank productive through the cooler months, with red drum also on the target list.
