About Coffins Patch
Coffins Patch is an outer, exposed sand flat off Marathon in the federal Atlantic waters of the Florida Keys, with depths running 15 to 30 feet. Dorado headline the species list and peak from March through July, while sailfish, wahoo, blackfin tuna, and king mackerel round out the pelagic lineup. Trolling is the dominant approach for dorado here, with rigged ballyhoo, skirted trolling lures, feathers, and diving plugs pulled across the open sand. Anglers also run and gun with sight casting, pitching live pilchards, cut ballyhoo chunks, or bucktail jigs to fish spotted near the surface. Live bait drifting with pilchards, goggle eyes, or ballyhoo covers the flat's exposed edge at a slower pace.
