About Delta Shoal
Delta Shoal is an exposed sand flat off Marathon, Florida, sitting in 5 to 10 feet of water along the outer edge of the Federal Atlantic Waters off the Florida Keys. Dorado headline the target list, with peak activity running from March through July, while sailfish, wahoo, blackfin tuna, and king mackerel round out the species roster. The shallow sand bottom and outer exposure put the flat squarely in the path of open-water conditions, so anglers work the surrounding water rather than the flat itself. Trolling rigged ballyhoo, skirted trolling lures, feathers, and diving plugs is the dominant approach for dorado here. Run and gun sight casting with live pilchards, cut ballyhoo chunks, or bucktail jigs, along with live bait drifting with pilchards, goggle eyes, or ballyhoo, gives anglers a direct shot at fish once they show near the surface.
