About East Washerwoman Shoal
East Washerwoman Shoal is an exposed outer sand flat off Marathon in the Florida Keys, holding 5 to 10 feet of water over open sand bottom. Permit work across the shoal from March through June, while bonefish peak in April and May and again in September and October. Sight casting drives the action over the clean sand, with live crabs and crab flies for permit and live shrimp or shrimp-pattern flies for bonefish. Great barracuda take over from November through February and respond to tube lures, topwater plugs, and spoons cast across the flat. Mutton snapper peak from April through June and come to bottom fishing with live pilchards and cut bait, and cobia round out the species list.
