About Elbow Bank

Elbow Bank is an exposed sand flat off Marathon, Florida, set on the outer edge of the Florida Keys State Waters Southwest Region in 5 to 10 feet of water. Bonefish move across the sand in peak windows of April through May and September through October, while permit and tarpon both peak from March through June. Great barracuda take over the bank from November through February, and red drum round out the species list. Sight casting is the dominant approach for bonefish and permit here, with shrimp-pattern flies and live shrimp working for bonefish and live crabs, crab flies, and bucktail jigs drawing permit over the open bottom. Tarpon anglers drift live crabs, live mullet, and live pinfish along the bank, and barracuda hunters cast tube lures, topwater plugs, and spoons across the clear sand in the cooler months.
