About Friend Key Bank
Friend Key Bank is an exposed sand flat off Marathon in the Florida Keys' southwest state waters, with depths running 5 to 10 feet across open bottom. Bonefish peak here in April–May and again in September–October, while permit and tarpon both reach their best numbers from March through June. Great barracuda take over the flat from November through February, and red drum round out the species list. The clear sand bottom suits sight casting, with bonefish anglers presenting live shrimp, small bucktail jigs, or shrimp-pattern and crab-pattern flies, and permit anglers working live crabs, crab flies, or bucktail jigs. Tarpon respond to live bait drifting with live crabs, mullet, pinfish, or shrimp. Winter barracuda hit tube lures, topwater plugs, and spoons cast along the flat's outer edge.
