About Grassy Key Bank
Grassy Key Bank is an exposed sand flat off Marathon, Florida, in the Southwest Region of the Florida Keys State Waters, with depths of 5 to 10 feet. Bonefish peak in April through May and again in September through October, while permit and tarpon both peak from March through June, and great barracuda take over from November through February. Sight casting dominates for bonefish and permit across the open sand, with shrimp-pattern flies, crab-pattern flies, and small bucktail jigs for bonefish and live crabs, crab flies, and bucktail jigs for permit. Tarpon respond to live bait drifting with live crabs, live mullet, live pinfish, or live shrimp. Winter barracuda hit tube lures, topwater plugs, swimming plugs, and spoons cast across the flat, and red drum round out the species list.
