About Marathon Reef
Marathon Reef is an artificial reef in the federal Atlantic waters off Marathon in the Florida Keys. Its structure draws Mutton Snapper, Black Grouper, King Mackerel, Wahoo, Greater Amberjack, and passing Dorado. Black Grouper peak from December through February, when bottom fishing with live pinfish, live grunts, or cut bait over the reef is the dominant approach. Mutton Snapper take over from April through June and respond to bottom fishing with live pilchards and ballyhoo plugs, or to bucktail jigs worked near the structure. Dorado peak from March through July, and trolling rigged ballyhoo and skirted trolling lures around the reef targets the fish moving through.
