About Molasses Key
Molasses Key is a protected sand flat near Marathon in the Florida Keys State Waters Southwest Region, with water running 5 to 10 feet deep over open sand bottom. Snapper drive the season here, with Mutton Snapper peaking April through June and Yellowtail Snapper and Gray Snapper both peaking May through July. Chumming and flatlining with silversides, glass minnows, or cut ballyhoo pulls Yellowtail Snapper up off the sand. Bottom fishing with live pilchards or live pinfish targets Mutton Snapper along the same stretch. From November through February, Great Barracuda take over the flat, and anglers target them by casting tube lures, topwater plugs, and spoons across the shallow sand, while Hogfish, Black Grouper, and King Mackerel round out the species list.
