About Money Key

Money Key is an outer, exposed drop-off near Marathon in the Florida Keys, where mixed bottom falls away through depths of 10 to 25 feet. Yellowtail Snapper and Gray Snapper peak here from May through July. Mutton Snapper run strongest from April through June, and Great Barracuda take over the colder months from November through February. Hogfish, Black Grouper and King Mackerel round out the resident mix along the edge. Anglers work the drop-off by chumming and flatlining silversides, glass minnows or cut ballyhoo for yellowtail, and by bottom fishing live pilchards or live pinfish for muttons holding on the mixed bottom. Barracuda respond to casting tube lures, topwater plugs and spoons across the shallower side of the break.
