About Pigeon Key Banks

Pigeon Key Banks is an outer, exposed sand flat off Marathon in the Florida Keys, holding 5 to 10 feet of water within the Southwest Region state waters. Permit peak from March through June, and bonefish run strongest in April–May and again in September–October, with both species targeted by sight casting live crabs, crab flies, shrimp-pattern flies, and bucktail jigs across the open sand. Great barracuda take over from November through February, when anglers cast tube lures, topwater plugs, swimming plugs, and spoons over the flat. Mutton snapper peak from April through June and respond to bottom fishing with live pilchards, cut bait, and live pinfish in the deeper 10-foot water. Cobia also cruise the bank, adding another species to the year-round list.
