About Red Bay Bank
Red Bay Bank is an exposed sand flat off Marathon in the Florida Keys State Waters Southwest Region, with depths running 10 to 15 feet across open bottom. Permit and tarpon both peak from March through June, bonefish move onto the sand in April–May and again in September–October, and great barracuda take over from November through February, with red drum rounding out the species list. Sight casting is the dominant approach for bonefish and permit here, with anglers presenting live shrimp, shrimp-pattern flies, or crab-pattern flies to bonefish and live crabs, crab flies, or bucktail jigs to permit tailing over the clean sand. Tarpon respond to live bait drifting with live crabs, live mullet, live pinfish, or live shrimp worked across the bank's outer edge. In the cooler months, casting tube lures, topwater plugs, swimming plugs, or spoons draws strikes from barracuda patrolling the open flat.
