About Sandy Point
Sandy Point is an exposed sand-bottom drop-off off Marathon in the Florida Keys, where the bottom falls from 5 to 25 feet along the outer edge. Yellowtail Snapper and Gray Snapper peak here from May through July, while Mutton Snapper hit their stride from April through June. Hogfish, Black Grouper, and King Mackerel also work the edge, and Great Barracuda take over in the cooler months from November through February. Chumming and flatlining with silversides, glass minnows, or cut ballyhoo pulls yellowtail up off the slope, and bottom fishing with live pilchards or live pinfish along the deeper sand targets muttons. In winter, casting tube lures, topwater plugs, or spoons across the shallower lip of the drop-off draws strikes from patrolling barracuda.
