About Schooner Bank
Schooner Bank is an outer, exposed sand flat off Marathon in the Florida Keys, with clear water running 10 to 15 feet deep across open bottom. Tarpon and permit both peak from March through June. Bonefish move across the sand in April and May and again in September and October, while great barracuda take over the flat from November through February. Sight casting with live crabs, crab flies, or bucktail jigs targets permit and bonefish tailing over the bare sand, and live bait drifting with live mullet, pinfish, or crabs works for tarpon cruising the deeper edges. In the cooler months, casting tube lures, spoons, and topwater plugs draws barracuda up off the bottom, and red drum round out the mix on the flat.
