About Scout Key

Scout Key is a protected sand flat near Marathon in the Florida Keys, with 5 to 10 feet of water inside the island chain. Gray Snapper and Yellowtail Snapper peak here from May through July, while Mutton Snapper peak earlier, from April through June. Hogfish, Black Grouper and King Mackerel round out the species list. Great Barracuda take over the flat from November through February and respond to casting tube lures, topwater plugs and spoons across the open sand. In the warmer months, anglers anchor up and use chumming and bottom fishing with cut ballyhoo, live shrimp and glass minnows to pull Gray Snapper and Yellowtail Snapper off the sheltered bottom.
