About Southeast Point
Southeast Point is an outer, exposed drop-off off Marathon in the Florida Keys, where mixed bottom falls away through depths of 15 to 45 feet. Yellowtail Snapper and Gray Snapper peak here from May through July, while Mutton Snapper hit their stride a month earlier, from April through June. Hogfish, Black Grouper, and King Mackerel round out the lineup, and Great Barracuda take over the edge from November through February. Anglers work the drop-off by chumming and flatlining silversides, glass minnows, and cut ballyhoo for yellowtail and gray snapper, and by bottom fishing live pilchards and live pinfish tight to the structure for muttons. In the cooler months, casting tube lures, topwater plugs, and spoons along the edge draws strikes from roaming barracuda.
