About Sprigger Bank

Sprigger Bank is an exposed sand flat on the outer edge of the Florida Keys State Waters southwest of Marathon, with bottom running 5 to 10 feet deep. Bonefish work the sand here in peak windows of April through May and again September through October, and sight casting with live shrimp, small bucktail jigs, or shrimp-pattern and crab-pattern flies is the dominant approach. Permit peak from March through June, when anglers sight cast live crabs, crab flies, and bucktail jigs to fish tailing or cruising over the open bottom. Tarpon share the same March through June window and respond to live bait drifting with live crabs, live mullet, live pinfish, or live shrimp across the bank. From November through February, great barracuda take over as the main target, and casting tube lures, topwater plugs, swimming plugs, and spoons covers the clear, shallow water efficiently, while red drum round out the species mix on the flat.
