About Sunken Coral Heads

Sunken Coral Heads is an exposed sand flat off Marathon, Florida, in the southwest region of the Florida Keys state waters, with depths running 5 to 10 feet. Bonefish move across the sand in April–May and again in September–October, while permit and tarpon peak from March through June, and great barracuda take over the flat from November through February. Sight casting is the primary approach for bonefish and permit here, with shrimp-pattern and crab-pattern flies for bonefish and live crabs or bucktail jigs for permit. Tarpon respond to live bait drifting with live mullet, live pinfish, or live crabs along the flat's outer edge. Barracuda and red drum round out the species list, and anglers target the barracuda by casting tube lures, topwater plugs, and spoons over the open sand.
