About West Turtle Shoal
West Turtle Shoal is an exposed sand flat off Marathon in the Florida Keys, sitting in 5 to 10 feet of water along the outer edge of the Southwest Region state waters. Permit peak here from March through June, and bonefish move across the sand in two windows, April through May and again September through October. Sight casting is the dominant approach for both, with live crabs, crab flies, and bucktail jigs for permit, and live shrimp, small bucktail jigs, and shrimp-pattern or crab-pattern flies for bonefish. Mutton snapper peak from April through June and respond to bottom fishing with live pilchards, live pinfish, cut bait, or ballyhoo plugs. Great barracuda take over from November through February, when casting tube lures, topwater plugs, swimming plugs, and spoons over the open sand draws strikes, and cobia also cruise the shoal.
