About Wasmer Reef
Wasmer Reef is an artificial reef in federal Gulf waters off Naples, Florida, where placed structure draws bottom-dwelling and pelagic species alike. Gag Grouper peak here from October through December, and Gray Snapper peak from May through July. Red Snapper, Red Grouper, Greater Amberjack, and King Mackerel also hold over the reef. Bottom fishing is the dominant approach for both grouper and snapper: live pinfish, live grunts, and live sardines go down tight to the structure for gags, while live shrimp, live pilchards, and squid work for Gray Snapper. Chumming with frozen chum blocks and cut sardines pulls snapper up off the reef, and jigging with bucktail jigs or metal jigs gives anglers another way to reach the grouper.
